Rongai Route
Day 1: YOUR ARRIVAL DAY
Arrive at the hotel in time for an evening meal and to meet your guide to discuss the trip, especially any queries you may have about kit.
Day 2: Kilimanjaro National Park (B, L, D)
The Rongai climb begins from the attractive wooden village of Nale Moru (1,950 m.) on a small path that winds through farmers fields before heading up the slopes of Kili. From a pine forest to rainforest, we keep our eyes out for a variety of wildlife, including the beautiful Kilimanjaro Colobus monkey.
Day 3: Kilimanjaro National Park (B,L,D)
The morning walk is a steady ascent up to the 'Second Cave' (3,450 m.) with superb views of Kibo and the Eastern ice fields on the crater rim. After lunch, we leave the main trail and strike out across the moorland on a smaller path towards the jagged peaks of Mawenzi.
Day 4: Kilimanjaro National Park (B, L, D)
A short but steep climb up grassy slopes is rewarded by superb all round views and a real sense of remote wilderness. We trek beyond the limits of vegetation, and enjoy a free afternoon to explore the surrounding area and acclimatize.
Day 5: Kilimanjaro National Park (B, L, D)
We cross the lunar desert of the 'Saddle' between Mawenzi and Kibo to reach School campsite (4,750 m.) at the bottom of the Kibo crater wall. The remainder of the day is spent resting in preparation for the final ascent before a very early night!
Day 6: Kilimanjaro Summit (B, L, D)
We will start the final, and by far the steepest and most demanding, part of the climb by torchlight shortly after midnight . We plod very slowly in the darkness on a switchback trail through loose volcanic scree, resting briefly at Gillman's Point (5,685m). Those who are still feeling strong can make the three hour round trip to Uhuru Peak (5,896 m.), the height of Africa !
Day 7: Kilimanjaro Descent (B, L, D)
A steady descent takes us down through moorland to Mandara Hut (2,700m.), before we continue descending through lovely lush forest to the National Park gate at Marangu (1,830 m.)
Day 8: Mt. Kilimanjaro National Park . Depart
After breakfast you are free to relax, rush to the airport or start a Tanzania safari.
